A convert from
basketball
In the winter of 1999 I was
playing basketball for Boroughmuir Basketball club up in Edinburgh;
I had always been a great fan of Basketball and Michael Jordan was
my hero.Kenny Douglas and
Andrew (Tank) Gibson had been up to my house to see if I had fancied
coming to the Volunteer Park to train and play with Hawick Trades.
My dad had played for the Trades when he was younger and my brother
Ross was at the time playing for the Trades. I wasn’t really
enjoying playing basketball at the time and the travelling after
work to Edinburgh was getting a bit much, so after some more
persuasion from Kenny & Tank I agreed to give it a go at trying my
hand at Rugby.
Rugby's the game
for me
I remember standing outside with Davie Macadam at the Volunteer a
bit apprehensive about going in for training, when Kenny Douglas
seen us and welcomed us both inside. I really enjoyed the atmosphere
at training and was made really welcome by all the guys.
I played around six games for the
Trades, one of my first being against Berwick. I
remember giving away a penalty and being annoyed about it: Berwick
took a short tap penalty and I put in a huge tackle on the ball
carrier, mainly out of rage. The referee gave another penalty for me
not being ten metres, so this time I made sure I was ten metres and
again I put in another “big hit” - this time successfully and Trades
regained the ball. I remember thinking how much I
enjoyed putting in the big tackles and from that moment I knew that
I enjoyed the physical contact and that Rugby was the game for me.
Cameraderie at
Glynneath
Hawick 2nds had been up to the Volunteer to approach me to go to
Mansfield and I reluctantly agreed to go after seeking advice and
also on the understanding that I would be travelling with the Trades
to Glynneath for the annual game against the Welsh club which I had
heard so much about.
The trip to Glynneath was one of
the highlights of my time with the Trades. The camaraderie and
atmosphere experienced whilst down there was brilliant, and to make
the weekend even better I was fortunate to be awarded the man of the
match shield which I believe was only ever awarded to a few select
Trades players over the years, something which I will always remain
very proud of receiving.
Grateful
I shall always be eternally grateful to Hawick Trades RFC for
introducing me to the game of rugby and for the continued support
that they still give me in my career. |
