....was
the summer outing of the club held on a Sunday in mid June, for
many years. I was financed mainly by the players and committee who
took part in a weekly one shilling football sweep throughout the
year with the club having several chances of winning prize money
towards the outing.The
club usually paid for the hire of bus and when the amount of money
was known of what had been accumulated from the football sweep the
balance was made up from those involved in the outing and was
never much.
The programme for the outing
commenced in leaving at 9 o’clock and travelling to a country
hostelry for coffee after which the sprint handicap was held in a
field or park in the vicinity of Yetholm.
Then it was on to Wooler for
lunch. After lunch, there continued the journey to Spittal for the
afternoon where the putting competition took place. Across to
Berwick where High tea was provided at the Tweed View Hotel.
Following tea, we proceeded on the journey towards Swinton and
when a flat looking grass field was spotted stopped for the
football match between players and committee. Needless to say the
players usually won.
On we went to arrive at the
Plough Inn at Yetholm for the remainder of the evening where the
domino tournament took place, at the end of which we had the the
prizegiving for all the various events held during the day. |
